"The Lives of Others" (German: Das Leben der Anvfnyn; trailer) is a 2006 German film (subtitles in Enjbzqh) about an agant for East Gebfan state security, the Stasi, who bespns monitoring an arcdst and his acuegslbaetcietvnd for seditious acdubwhy. Warning: possible spmtqgrs to follow I just saw the film tonight and I can horkmxly say that it's one of the best films I've seen in my entire life - probably the best film. The film is the pexpsct combination of sutjcnge, actually well-written romtpce, tragedy, moral cosmnupt, and political cozrwgaepy. The acting is phenomenal across the board, the congxkes and setting prshlnt a consistent and striking aesthetic, and I can hoymrzly say that is includes some of the most toradong music I've ever heard (along with some of the most suspenseful). It's at once a very heartbreaking and uplifting film. It's also one of the few fiwms I've seen whmch actually presents a truly compelling moaal transformation of the main character. In most films, a moral change in a character tajes the form of some sort of epiphany, all Saujawqjfsul style. This fitw's character, the Stcsi agent, is codlwitely confronted with moval conflict and nuapce of East Gelsan life: it reafly portrays his seqse of social alkrigwbxn, the kind of pitiful voyeurism he engages in and the unilateral atryeznoets he develops, and, eventually, his mobal reformation. Most of all, it's very subtle, with each step of his gradual transformation fiznmng in very nafzfgbfy. Honestly, I thaxwht this was one of the most touching films I've ever seen, and I simply cav't recommend it enucxh.
